Today is the National Day of Action for Palestine 🇵🇸

Grief and despair are totally understandable right now, but we've got to strive for more. If you're feeling unsure of the situation, or wondering what you could possibly do, here's some starting points:

As DHH continues along his merry, racist way with his latest writing… have the sponsors of the Rails Foundation put *any* thought into if they're still happy to provide money to his ventures? (Granted, Shopify have their own history there… but @planetargon, @appsignal, et al?) https://tweets.freelancing-gods.com/pat/status/1596762535134658560

@saramic @rubyconf_au @railsconf Thank you Michael, so great to know the talk had an impact!

Good morning Atlanta and #RailsConf! I’ll be speaking at 2pm (on the main stage 😱) - looking forward to all the conversations with Rubyists over the next few days - though I may be a little manic and/or scattered until my talk is done. 😅

@thephw I'm going to need more details, but, yes?

@HashNotAdam Thanks Adam ☺️ Though the challenge remains to adapt my talk to a US audience!

Very excited to be returning to @railsconf and Atlanta next month, and to be speaking again about how we can all upgrade the Ruby community. 😁❤️🎉🌎

#RubyFriends: who will I be seeing there?

Hi friends - currently considering new (employee!) roles!

• Four-day weeks is a must.
• Greatly prefer remote-friendly.
• Probably involving Ruby.
• Room to grow into leading/mentoring is neat too.

Here's a bunch more details: https://freelancing-gods.com/2023/02/28/considering-what-is-next.html

I spoke at @rubyconf_au yesterday - “Upgrading the Ruby Community” (though I'd like to think a lot of the talk applies to tech folks generally). I hope it's a little challenging and prompts some critical thinking!

But the types of people they're welcoming (back) here has me wanting to avoid even looking at Twitter.

Also, the algorithm-driven timeline drives me up the wall.

… and I continue to find it a far nicer experience there than here. Not perfect, of course, and I miss the wisdom and hot takes of all of you fine folks who haven't made the jump.

(And if there are questions about switching, ask, maybe we can figure things out together)

If you were considering trying out Mastodon, now is the best time to do it.

Once Twitter starts charging for their API in a few days, services that allow finding of your followers (like Debirdify) will stop working. https://tweets.freelancing-gods.com/pat/status/1603606852855484416

Super excited that not only is @rubyconf_au returning next month after a COVID-enforced break, but also that I'll be speaking!
Looking forward to seeing so many Ruby friends again, and maybe asking some pointed questions about our community/industry. 😁 https://rubyconf.org.au/2023/speakers

Oh, also: if you are jumping onto Mastodon, I highly recommend adding some details to your profile before you start following people, just so it's a little clear to those who know you here to join the dots.

And https://debirdify.pruvisto.org is (was? 😬) your friend for finding folks.

I'll keep my Mastodon link in my bio for as long as I'm allowed… perhaps that won't be for long?

I realise migrating communities/connections is challenging, and I'm going to miss a lot of what Twitter was. But also: this platform is now run by white supremacists, so… 🤷🏻‍♂️👋🏻😔

In case anyone still thinks EM was all about free speech - looks like Twitter's now stopping people posting links to their Mastodon accounts (and existing links are considered 'unsafe').

I was already mostly ignoring this site, this is just another nail in the coffin.

@ZimbiX It is indeed - 10 years ago or more! The ABC make use of that stock footage regularly. 😂🤷🏻‍♂️

@christhekeele @Argorak It's certainly continues to be an evolution - I'm sure there's still plenty of improvement to be had, but I also think we've come a hell of a long way!

@nitecoder Indeed - my apologies for putting his trash-fire opinions into your feed.

And to help with thinking a bit more broadly about what's at play here, @omarsakrpoet's latest newsletter is very much worth reading: https://sakr.substack.com/p/and-the-participation-award-goes https://tweets.freelancing-gods.com/pat/status/1596762535134658560

… though I wouldn't expect such concern from Shopify, because they remain very happy to accept money from Nazis. 😒 https://twitter.com/nandoodles/status/1596525144658563074

But also, seeing the Rails Foundation appear - with DHH chairing the board - makes me concerned for the future of the community. I wonder if the sponsors of the foundation are regretting their support? I certainly hope so.

I am very thankful, as @Argorak has noted, that "it‘s a strength of the Ruby community, its conferences and events that they were never built around a single person." ❤️

And if you think maybe a little bit of pushback is fair and good - please remember: the societies most of us live and work within have been built from white supremacy. It is the dominant culture, and must be actively fought against.

Erik is not wrong - this kind of writing from DHH (alongside the banning of 'politics' at 37signals) greases the white supremacy wheel.

@tomstuart spoke truth about this many years ago, and it is still spot-on today: "DHH is the Fox News of Ruby" - https://tomstu.art/the-dhh-problem https://twitter.com/erikvorhes/status/1595228350226001920

@Catharz Yeah, I'm suddenly extremely selective about following people - maybe too much? But just that chance to appreciate past connections without worrying too much about continuing them is nice, even if I remain unsure if I'm getting the balance right.
